Wayfair, Appliances Direct, Gold's Gym Fined £6 Million for Misleading Sales
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has levied substantial fines against three prominent retailers: Wayfair, Appliances Direct, and Gold's Gym. The combined penalties amount to £6 million, following an investigation into their sales practices.
The CMA's findings detailed a systematic use of misleading techniques designed to manipulate consumer behaviour. This included employing aggressive pressure selling tactics, presenting exaggerated discount claims, and creating a false sense of urgency to drive immediate purchases.
Investigators highlighted instances where products were advertised with discounts that were not genuine reductions from previous selling prices. Additionally, the retailers were found to have used misleading scarcity claims, suggesting limited stock or time-sensitive offers that did not accurately reflect availability or promotional periods. These practices are deemed a clear breach of consumer protection regulations, designed to ensure fair and transparent trading environments.
