Welsh Boundary Commission Proposes New Bilingual Names for Senedd Constituencies

The Boundary Commission for Wales has launched a public consultation regarding alterations to proposed Welsh Senedd constituency names. The commission, tasked with redrawing the electoral map for the expanded 96-member Senedd, suggested initial names that included a number of Welsh-only designations.

However, public and stakeholder feedback during the initial consultation period highlighted a significant desire for bilingual names. Consequently, the commission is now proposing to amend several constituencies to incorporate both Welsh and English forms, ensuring greater clarity and representation for all residents.

For example, the proposed 'Ceredigion Gleddau' constituency could become 'Ceredigion and Daugleddau', and 'Dwyfor Meirionnydd' might transition to 'Dwyfor and Meirionnydd'. This adjustment aims to address concerns about accessibility and inclusivity raised by various groups, including local authorities and linguistic organisations.

The updated proposals are open for public comment until 10 July, with the commission expected to submit its final recommendations to the Senedd later this year. The changes are intended to be implemented for the next Welsh Senedd election in May 2026.
