Wigan Cafe Director Deplores Reform UK Conduct During Nigel Farage's Unannounced Visit
Gemma Crompton, director of The Hamlet Wigan Community Interest Company (CIC), has sharply criticised Reform UK following a visit from party leader Nigel Farage and Makerfield by-election candidate Rob Kenyon. Crompton stated the unannounced arrival, accompanied by a substantial entourage and media presence, created an "intimidating and overwhelming" atmosphere for the cafe's vulnerable trainees, staff, and families.
The incident occurred during a celebratory event at The Hamlet, marking trainees' Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards and the securing of a 25-year lease from Wigan Council. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham was also present for a non-campaign event, focusing on recognising the community organisation's achievements. Crompton emphasised that the day was "at no point intended to be a political event or platform for campaigning."
Crompton's letter to Farage detailed concerns over safeguarding, dignity, and emotional wellbeing, stressing that organisations supporting vulnerable young adults should not be subjected to such unannounced political interventions. She also highlighted the cafe's clear signage prohibiting photography or filming involving trainees, and requested a formal apology and assurances for similar organisations in the future.
Reform UK's response acknowledged The Hamlet's work but suggested Crompton's criticism might be "politically influenced." The party maintained that Farage and Kenyon's visit was "completely ad hoc and non-political," merely a stop for refreshments, and expressed surprise at the concerns, claiming they were not raised during the visit. The party also denied their photographers took pictures and noted some young adults positively engaged with Farage.
The by-election in Makerfield follows the resignation of Labour MP Josh Simons, a move widely interpreted as facilitating Andy Burnham's potential return to national politics and a future leadership challenge within the Labour Party. Polling day is scheduled for Thursday 18 June.
