Woman Suffers Serious Injuries in Coogee Beach Shark Attack, Sydney Emergency Services Confirm
A woman suffered serious arm and leg injuries following a shark attack at Coogee Beach in Sydney. Emergency services responded on Saturday morning after the 35-year-old was pulled from the water by members of the public, who initiated first aid.
She was subsequently airlifted to hospital by helicopter. As a precautionary measure, several beaches in the vicinity were closed.
An eyewitness, Nicola Logan, described seeing a "massive pool of blood" and a woman struggling before a ski paddler assisted her to shore. This incident follows two fatal shark attacks in Western Australia: a diver last week south-east of Perth, and a father-of-two in May near Perth.
Australia records a high incidence of shark encounters globally, with nearly 1,300 documented attacks since 1791, over 260 of which have been fatal. Popular coastal areas often employ protective measures against shark attacks.
