Youth Parliament Member Urges Government to Continue Funding Scheme
A representative of the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) has issued a plea to the government, advocating for the continuation of funding for the initiative. The UKYP, an organisation designed to involve young individuals in the political process, is set to lose its government financial backing.
Since its inception 23 years ago, the scheme has provided a platform for thousands of young people to debate national issues and directly influence policy. Critics argue that ending funding undermines efforts to foster civic engagement and risks alienating a demographic already underrepresented in formal political structures. The government's decision signals a broader divestment from programmes aimed at nurturing democratic participation among younger generations, potentially leaving a vacuum in youth advocacy and political education.
