Aberdeen Airport Baggage Screening Staff Prepare for Monday Strike Action
Security staff responsible for baggage screening at Aberdeen International Airport are set to begin strike action this coming Monday. The Unite union, representing the workers, has cautioned that the industrial action will lead to “significant delays” for passengers.
Pay Dispute Leads to Industrial Action
The dispute stems from a rejected pay offer. Staff members, employed by ICTS, a contractor for the airport, voted overwhelmingly to reject a 7% pay increase. Unite argues that this offer falls short, given the current cost of living pressures and the profitability of ICTS.
According to the union, the proposed 7% rise constitutes a real-terms pay cut for its members, who are reportedly earning just above the statutory minimum wage. Unite has highlighted that ICTS is a multinational company with substantial profits, suggesting that a more equitable offer is feasible.
The strike is planned for a continuous period, starting from Monday. While Aberdeen Airport management has acknowledged the impending action, they have not yet detailed specific contingency measures or how services will be maintained. Passengers planning to travel via Aberdeen Airport next week are advised to monitor the situation closely for potential disruption to their journeys.
