Accra Flooding Kills Thirteen Residents, Ghanaian Authorities Issue Further Storm Warning
Thirteen people have died in Ghana's capital, Accra, following severe flooding caused by torrential rains. The fatalities include a family of five in the town of Gbawe, situated on the city's outskirts, where their home collapsed.
Displacement and Damage
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) reported that over 500 individuals have been displaced by the floods, with numerous homes and businesses sustaining significant damage. Infrastructure, including roads and bridges, has also been compromised, hindering rescue and relief efforts.
Government Response and Warnings
Ghanaian authorities have issued a stark warning regarding an impending storm system, urging residents in low-lying areas to evacuate to safer locations. The meteorological agency forecasts further heavy rainfall, which is expected to exacerbate the current flood conditions. Critics have long pointed to inadequate urban planning and drainage systems in Accra as contributing factors to the recurring flood crises.
