Alice Springs Hospital Besieged After Jefferson Lewis Arrest Over Five-Year-Old Girl's Murder
Violence flared outside Alice Springs Hospital on Thursday night after the arrest of Jefferson Lewis, a man suspected in the murder of a five-year-old girl, identified for cultural reasons as Kumanjayi Little Baby. Lewis was apprehended late on Thursday after being located by local community members and reportedly subjected to an assault.
Video footage depicts dozens of individuals congregating outside the hospital, some of whom threw projectiles, prompting police to deploy tear gas. Reports indicate a crowd of approximately 400 Aboriginal people gathered, shouting demands for 'payback'—a term signifying traditional punishment under Aboriginal law in Central Australia—and accusing police of shielding Lewis. Chants calling for Lewis's death were also heard.
Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole stated that Lewis was unconscious when officers intervened. Dole confirmed that around 200 people then turned on police and paramedics as they attempted to respond to the assault reports. Several emergency service personnel sustained injuries, though no arrests have been made in connection with the violent disorder.
Lewis has since been transported from Alice Springs to Darwin and is currently in police custody. Charges against Lewis are anticipated in the coming days. Forensic examinations to confirm Kumanjayi Little Baby's identity and determine the cause of death are ongoing. Lewis had been released from prison six days prior to the girl's disappearance last Saturday.
