Amazon Expands UK Drone Delivery Trials to Darlington, Targets National Rollout

Amazon has applied for permission to significantly broaden its drone delivery operations, aiming to cover all of Darlington. This expansion comes after the technology giant launched a more limited drone service in the area, which has now seen its delivery zones extended beyond its original scope.

The company's latest application to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) seeks to remove previous restrictions, including a 'line of sight' rule that mandated drones remain visible to human operators. If approved, Amazon would be able to conduct beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flights, a critical step towards automated, long-distance deliveries.

A spokesperson for Amazon highlighted the company's long-term vision for a fully integrated, national drone delivery network. The current trials in Darlington are portrayed as a testbed for developing the operational framework and safety protocols necessary for broader implementation.

This initiative reflects the continued corporate push to automate logistics and reduce labour costs, a common thread among major multinational corporations.
