American Livestreamer Jailed in South Korea for Public Nuisance
Ismael Ramsey Khalid, 25, who operates under the moniker Johnny Somali, received a six-month prison sentence from a South Korean court. He was convicted on multiple charges, notably for being a public nuisance and distributing sexual deepfakes, after a series of controversial acts during his visit to the country.
Khalid gained notoriety for posting a video in November 2024 showing him kissing and performing lap dances on a 'comfort women' statue, which commemorates approximately 200,000 women, predominantly Korean, forced into sexual servitude by Japanese soldiers during World War Two. This act, alongside other disruptive behaviour, led to his arrest and subsequent inability to leave South Korea.
Court's Verdict and Broader Implications
The court stated, "The defendant repeatedly committed crimes against unspecified members of the public to generate profit via YouTube and distributed the content in disregard of Korean law." While prosecutors had sought a three-year term, judges noted the "absence of severe harm to victims" in handing down the lesser sentence, according to The Korea Herald.
Upon his release, Khalid will also be barred from working with organisations that serve minors and individuals with disabilities. His history includes previous arrests and fines in Japan for disruptive conduct and an arrest in Israel for inappropriate remarks.
