Andy Burnham Submits Identical Devolution Articles to Welsh, Scottish, London Publications
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham submitted an article on English devolution to Welsh news site WalesOnline, which the publication subsequently retracted for being "error-filled" and largely identical to pieces provided to Scottish and London media.
WalesOnline stated the article contained "significant factual errors" and lacked specific Welsh context, leading to its removal within hours of publication. The piece, titled "England's regions have waited long enough for devolution. We must seize this chance," was found to be almost word-for-word the same as articles appearing in The National in Scotland and CityAM in London.
The article's generic content failed to address the distinct devolution landscape in Wales, prompting criticism. The National's version, published days prior, featured only minor alterations to reflect a Scottish audience, while the CityAM piece also replicated much of the original text.
This incident underscores a broader cynicism regarding the often-superficial promotion of "devolution" by national political figures. Such standardised commentary, devoid of specific regional understanding, suggests a focus on broad-brush messaging rather than genuinely tailored policy engagement with the diverse political and economic realities of the UK's constituent nations and regions.
