Angela Rayner Declines to Repay £16,876 Severance After Cabinet Reappointment

Angela Rayner, recently reappointed as Housing Secretary, has stated she has no intention of repaying the £16,876 severance package she received last September. The payment was issued after her removal from the cabinet by the Prime Minister.

Ms Rayner was dismissed from her role as Foreign Secretary in September 2025 following a cabinet reshuffle. In accordance with the Ministerial and Other Pensions and Salaries Act 1991, ministers under the age of 65 who are dismissed are entitled to a quarter of their annual ministerial salary as severance. Her return to government within six months of receiving the payment has drawn scrutiny regarding public expenditure.

Government guidelines stipulate that former ministers are expected to repay severance if they are reappointed within three weeks of their departure. However, Ms Rayner's reappointment falls outside this three-week window, thus legally exempting her from returning the funds. Her office confirmed that the payment was received legally and there is no obligation to reimburse the Treasury.
