Angela Rayner Slams Government's Visa Rule Changes as Unfair 'Goalpost' Shift
Angela Rayner, the Shadow Housing Secretary, has voiced strong opposition to the UK government's proposals to modify the waiting period for migrants seeking permanent residency. Speaking ahead of the Labour Party conference, Ms Rayner argued that altering the requirements for settled status retrospectively constitutes an unfair 'changing of the goalposts'.
The Home Office is reportedly considering extending the time required for certain visa holders to qualify for indefinite leave to remain. Ms Rayner emphasised the detrimental impact these changes could have on individuals contributing to the UK economy and public services, stating, "Many people came here on the basis of what the rules were, they're working in our public services, they're contributing, and we are just changing the goalposts."
