Anthony Hall Jailed After 150-Mile Drunken Drive from Huddersfield to Carlisle
Anthony Hall, a 50-year-old blind man, has received a 16-month prison sentence and a three-year driving disqualification for taking his partner's vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol. Hall's journey began in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, and concluded near Carlisle, Cumbria, covering a distance of around 150 miles during the night.
Carlisle Crown Court heard that Hall, who has been registered blind for 20 years, consumed a significant quantity of alcohol before driving. His partner alerted the police after discovering her car and Hall missing.
Police Intercept Hall in Cumbria
Police officers located Hall's vehicle near junction 42 of the M6 motorway in Cumbria. Upon stopping the car, Hall was found to be impaired. A roadside breathalyser test indicated he had 114 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, exceeding the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.
Hall admitted to aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol. This incident highlights the profound risks posed by intoxicated driving, particularly when compounded by severe visual impairment, which Hall had concealed from his partner for an extended period.
