Arrest Made in Tragic Channel Crossing Deaths
A 27-year-old Sudanese national has been apprehended on suspicion of endangering life following the tragic deaths of four people attempting to cross the Channel. The incident occurred on Thursday near Saint Etienne au Mont, close to Calais, where two men and two women lost their lives whilst trying to board a water taxi.
Investigation Underway
The suspect was arrested at the Manston processing centre in Kent, which handles arrivals via small boats, and remains in police custody. According to the National Crime Agency (NCA), 38 individuals were returned to French shores, while 74 successfully reached the UK. Investigators are currently interviewing those who completed the journey.
French prosecutors have also initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the boat's launch, with the NCA providing assistance to their French police counterparts. NCA Deputy Director Craig Turner affirmed the agency's commitment: “Working with colleagues at home and abroad, we are determined to do all we can to identify and bring to justice those responsible for these four tragic deaths.”
Government Response
Migration Minister Mike Tapp commented on the tragedy, stating, “Every death in the Channel is a tragedy.” He reiterated the dedication of UK law enforcement to collaborate with international partners to prevent such perilous journeys and prosecute those responsible. Mr Tapp also highlighted the Border Security Act, introduced last year, which grants officers enhanced powers to disrupt criminal smuggling operations bringing illegal migrants to British shores.
