Attorney General Lord Hermer Defends Starmer Leadership Amidst Election Setbacks
Sir Keir Starmer possesses the fortitude to overcome a leadership challenge, according to Attorney General Lord Hermer. In his initial interview, Lord Hermer contended that Sir Keir has been consistently underestimated throughout his career, a pattern he expects will continue as the Prime Minister faces renewed scrutiny.
The two men, both human rights barristers at Doughty Street Chambers since 1996, share a lengthy professional and personal history. Sir Keir appointed Lord Hermer as the government's chief legal adviser following Labour's 2024 general election victory.
Electoral Losses and Internal Dissent
Earlier this month, Labour experienced significant electoral setbacks, losing control of the Welsh Senedd and nearly 1,500 council seats across England. These results prompted calls for Sir Keir's resignation, leading to the departure of former Health Secretary Wes Streeting and several junior ministers.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, widely perceived as a leading contender in any potential leadership contest, is now seeking a return to Westminster in the forthcoming Makerfield by-election. This development places Sir Keir and Mr Streeting in the unusual position of campaigning for Mr Burnham's victory, despite internal party rivalries.
Lord Hermer dismissed suggestions that Sir Keir was angered by the internal dissent, characterising the Prime Minister as exceptionally resilient. He further rejected criticism from former Labour Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair regarding a perceived lack of vision, insisting Sir Keir maintains a clear commitment to equality and opportunity for all citizens.
