Australian Killer Andre McKechnie Denied Prison Vegemite for Cultural Rights Claim
Andre McKechnie, an Australian national serving a life sentence in New Zealand for the 2004 murder of property developer Stephen Dudley, has had his appeal to consume Vegemite in prison dismissed by the Supreme Court.
McKechnie had argued that Vegemite consumption was a cultural right, essential to his Australian identity. His legal challenge follows an earlier, unsuccessful attempt to obtain Marmite.
Justice Stephen Kos, in delivering the court's decision, found no basis for McKechnie's assertion that access to Vegemite constituted a fundamental cultural entitlement. The ruling upholds the Department of Corrections' discretion in managing prisoner diets and permitted items, effectively terminating McKechnie's protracted legal efforts over the condiment.
