Axel Scheffler Calls AI Image Generation a 'Worrying' Development for Illustrators

Axel Scheffler, the acclaimed illustrator known for his work on 'The Gruffalo', has voiced unease regarding the rise of artificial intelligence in image creation. Scheffler characterised the development as 'worrying', highlighting its potential impact on professional illustrators.

Speaking as he and author Dame Julia Donaldson launched their latest collaborative work, Scheffler articulated his reservations. He stressed that while AI-generated images are currently discernible from human-created artwork, he anticipates a future where such distinctions will become increasingly blurred, posing a direct challenge to the livelihoods of artists.
