Ballina: Yacht Sinks, Rescue Boat Capsizes Off New South Wales Coast, Three Dead
Three people, including two volunteer rescuers, have died following a yacht sinking and a rescue boat capsizing in treacherous conditions off the New South Wales coast. Emergency services were alerted at 18:15 local time on Monday after reports of a yacht in distress near the break wall in South Ballina.
A Marine Rescue NSW crew of six was dispatched, but their vessel overturned while crossing the Ballina Bar. Two rescuers, aged 78 and 62, were confirmed dead. Four other rescuers, aged 55, 75, and two aged 61, sustained injuries and were taken to hospital.
The body of a third man, in his mid-50s and not wearing a life jacket, was found on the nearby sand. He has not yet been formally identified. Police confirmed the yacht, which struck the break wall and broke apart, has since sunk.
Superintendent Joe McNulty of the NSW Police Marine Area Command praised the volunteer crew's "heroic actions," highlighting the extreme risks undertaken to assist others. A spokesperson for Marine Rescue NSW stated their immediate focus is on supporting the affected families and volunteers, acknowledging the "ultimate sacrifice" made by the two rescuers.
Police are investigating how the yacht came to be so close to the break wall, with divers expected to return to the scene on Thursday to recover evidence. The local community in Ballina has expressed profound grief over the incident.
