Barclays Eliminates 5,000 Roles, Citing Increased AI Adoption Across Operations
Barclays disclosed a reduction of approximately 5,000 jobs during 2023, a move largely driven by the adoption of artificial intelligence and automation within its operational framework. These redundancies, accounting for roughly 5% of the bank's total workforce, reflect an ongoing strategy to enhance efficiency and reduce overheads.
The majority of these cuts impacted back-office and support functions, areas where AI and automated systems are increasingly being deployed to manage routine tasks. This organisational shift underscores a wider trend in the financial sector, where technological advancements are reshaping traditional employment structures.
While Barclays reported a pre-tax profit of £6.6bn for 2023, the institution continues to face scrutiny over its strategic direction and cost-cutting measures. The bank's leadership has emphasised the importance of digital transformation in maintaining competitiveness, yet the human cost of such transitions remains a significant concern for employees and labour organisations.
