Stormont Executive to Hold Further Budget Talks with Northern Ireland Secretary
Northern Ireland's political leaders are set for another round of discussions with the UK government concerning the Executive's significant budget deficit. Chris Heaton-Harris, the Northern Ireland Secretary, will meet with local politicians following a previous meeting that failed to resolve the funding impasse.
The DUP's Finance Minister, Caoimhe Archibald, has stated that the Executive faces a £470 million hole in its finances for the current year. She emphasised that the Stormont administration lacks the capacity to balance its books without additional support from London.
First Minister Michelle O'Neill (Sinn Féin) and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly (DUP) attended an earlier meeting with Mr Heaton-Harris, which concluded without an agreement on increased funding. The ongoing discussions highlight the persistent financial pressures on devolved government in Northern Ireland, consistently reliant on subventions from the UK Treasury.
