Devon and Cornwall Brace for Storm Austen, 80mph Winds Forecast
Devon and Cornwall are preparing for significant disruption as Storm Austen is forecast to bring wind gusts of up to 80mph (130km/h) to the South West.
The Met Office has issued an amber warning for wind, encompassing coastal areas and parts of Dartmoor, effective from early Friday morning. A broader yellow warning for wind and rain is in place across the entire region throughout Friday.
Anticipated impacts include potential damage to buildings, disruption to travel, and power outages. Road closures are possible, and bus, train, and ferry services may face cancellations or delays. The Met Office has also warned of a small chance of injuries and danger to life from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads, and properties.
Network Rail has advised passengers to check their travel plans before setting off. Local authorities are urging residents to secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm's peak. Emergency services are on standby across both counties.
