Barclays Staff Demand One-Off Payment for Increased Office Return Costs
Unite, the trade union, has submitted a formal claim to Barclays management, demanding a one-off payment for employees required to spend more time in the office. The union, which represents approximately 36,000 Barclays staff members, states that the payment is necessary to cover increased costs associated with commuting and childcare.
Sharon Graham, Unite's General Secretary, stated that companies like Barclays, which have reported substantial profits, should adequately compensate their workforce for the additional financial burden of office attendance. This demand comes as many organisations revise their remote working policies, increasingly requiring employees to return to physical workplaces.
Barclays recently announced a pre-tax profit of £6.9 billion for the financial year 2023. This financial performance, according to Unite, provides ample scope for the bank to address the concerns of its employees regarding office return expenses. The union has emphasised that the cost-of-living crisis further exacerbates these financial pressures on workers.
The move highlights ongoing tensions between financial institutions and their workforces over flexible working arrangements and associated costs, particularly in a climate where corporate profits continue to climb while household budgets remain strained.
