Belfast High Court Upholds Chris Bryant's Decision to Ban Drumcree March
The High Court in Belfast has ruled that Sir Chris Bryant's determination, made on 9th October, to prohibit the controversial Drumcree parade, was entirely lawful. This judgement upholds the ban, preventing the march from proceeding as planned.
The legal challenge sought to overturn Bryant's original decision, which had been met with predictable frustration from loyalist factions. However, the court found no grounds to invalidate the ban, asserting that the proper procedures were followed and the decision fell within the remit of the designated authority.
The Drumcree parade has historically been a flashpoint for sectarian tensions in Northern Ireland, frequently leading to public disorder and considerable policing operations. The prohibition of the march has consistently been framed by authorities as a necessary measure to maintain public order and prevent sectarian conflict, a stance now reinforced by this High Court ruling.
