Binance Engineer Targeted by Sophisticated Phishing Scheme Leading to £5 Billion Crypto Theft
Cryptocurrency giant Binance has confirmed that a sophisticated phishing operation facilitated the theft of digital assets valued at £5 billion. The attack exploited a company engineer through a series of fake job interviews, ultimately compromising internal systems.
The engineer was initially contacted via a legitimate professional networking platform, then subjected to multiple interview rounds with individuals posing as representatives from a fabricated company. These interactions reportedly led to the installation of malicious software on the engineer's device, granting the perpetrators unauthorised access to Binance's network.
This incident underscores the persistent and evolving threat landscape faced by the cryptocurrency sector. Despite Binance's claims of robust security protocols, the successful infiltration through social engineering tactics highlights vulnerabilities beyond traditional technical defences. Such events routinely erode public trust in decentralised finance, often at the expense of ordinary investors.
