Binance Halts Blockchain After £5.2 Billion Cyber Heist Linked to North Korea
Cryptocurrency giant Binance has paused its proprietary blockchain, BNB Smart Chain, following a sophisticated cyber-attack that saw an estimated £5.2 billion pilfered. The company acknowledged a 'complex exploit' on a cross-chain bridge, a critical component facilitating asset transfers between different blockchains.
Investigations are ongoing, but early assessments suggest the attack is linked to North Korean state-sponsored hacking groups. Western intelligence agencies and cybersecurity firms have consistently highlighted North Korea's reliance on cybercrime to circumvent sanctions and fund its weapons programmes, making such a massive digital theft consistent with their established modus operandi.
Binance has stated it is working to recover the stolen funds and has pledged to provide further updates. The incident underscores the inherent vulnerabilities within the decentralised finance ecosystem, particularly for platforms that serve as conduits for substantial capital flows, often under regulatory scrutiny deemed insufficient by critics.
