Pentagon Authorises $3 Billion Patriot Missile Sale to Ukraine, Bolstering Air Defence
The Pentagon has formally notified the US Congress of its decision to authorise the sale of 500 Patriot air defence interceptor missiles to Ukraine. This substantial transfer, valued at $3.2 billion, aims to bolster Ukraine's capacity to defend against the barrage of ballistic missiles consistently deployed by Russia.
Patriot systems are widely recognised as the sole effective defence against Russia's sophisticated ballistic missile arsenal. Ukraine has repeatedly emphasised the urgent need for more advanced air defence capabilities as cities across the country continue to face significant aerial threats.
This approval follows consistent appeals from Ukrainian officials for increased Western military assistance, particularly in areas of air defence, ammunition, and armoured vehicles. The United States remains the largest single provider of military aid to Ukraine, with other NATO members and allies also contributing significant resources.
