Birmingham’s Grand Union Canal Mill Engulfed by Second Major Fire in Two Years
A substantial fire has broken out at a derelict mill building on Fazeley Street in Birmingham, adjacent to the Grand Union Canal. The structure, previously used as a filming location for the television series 'Peaky Blinders', was already in a state of disrepair following a major fire in October 2022.
West Midlands Fire Service dispatched twelve appliances and over 60 firefighters to the scene shortly before 20:00 BST. Crews from stations including Highgate, Aston, and Ward End were involved in tackling the blaze, which sent large plumes of smoke across the city. The service confirmed that the incident was “well-involved” and advised local residents to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke.
The repeated incidents at the site underscore broader concerns regarding the protection and management of disused industrial buildings in urban centres. The previous fire, which severely damaged the Grade II listed building, led to a significant clean-up operation and left the property vulnerable. Authorities have not yet commented on the cause of the latest inferno, nor on any potential investigations into site security or ownership responsibilities.
