Brighton Beach Rapists Receive Combined 33-Year Sentence for 2022 Attack
Brighton Crown Court has sentenced three individuals to a combined 33 years' imprisonment for the rape of a woman on Brighton beach. Sukru Yildirim, 28, of Grand Parade, Brighton, received a 14-year sentence. Mohammed Islam, 28, of George Street, London, was jailed for 10 years. Zakaria Babar, 23, of no fixed address, received a nine-year sentence.
The victim, a woman in her 20s, had been socialising in Brighton city centre on the night of 18 June 2022. She accepted a drink from a man she did not know, which she stated tasted unusual. Subsequent CCTV footage showed her being led away by Yildirim and Islam towards the beach. Babar later joined them.
The jury was presented with evidence detailing how the three men subjected the victim to a prolonged assault on the beach. Prosecutor Jonathan Atkinson described the attack as "cynical, predatory, and callous," highlighting the systematic nature of their actions.
Following a trial, a jury found all three men guilty of rape. The sentencing reflects the severity of the crime and the profound impact on the victim, as outlined during the court proceedings.
