Brighton Council Approves YouTube Couple's Donkey Sanctuary, Mandates Roman Ruin Investigation
Brighton and Hove City Council has approved plans for a donkey sanctuary on land owned by prominent YouTubers Zoella and Alfie Deyes. The couple, known for their online presence, sought permission to construct a barn, stables, and a handling area on fields adjacent to their £1.7 million property in the city. The approval is contingent on an archaeological evaluation of the site, following concerns about potential Roman-era remains.
The planning application, submitted by Mr Deyes, detailed intentions to house up to four donkeys. Prior to the council's decision, councillors had expressed reservations regarding the impact on the local landscape and wildlife, with some describing the proposed barn as 'huge' for the site. However, the application ultimately passed with five votes in favour and two against, with one abstention.
A critical condition of the planning consent mandates that the couple funds and facilitates an archaeological investigation of the plot. This requirement stems from previous discoveries in the area, including Roman coins and pottery, suggesting the presence of a Roman villa nearby. No construction can commence until this archaeological work is completed and its findings assessed.
The property already includes a swimming pool, gym, and an outdoor kitchen. The new sanctuary is slated for construction on land acquired by the couple in 2021, expanding their extensive estate.
