British Citizen Matthew Foster-Smith Detained in Ecuador Over Woman's Death in Colombia
Matthew Ashley Foster-Smith, 35, a British national, has been taken into custody in Ecuador. This arrest follows a collaborative investigation by Colombian and Ecuadorean police into the death of Laura Vanessa Ovalle, a 31-year-old Venezuelan woman whose body was found within a suitcase in Bogotá, Colombia.
Colombian law enforcement, specifically the Attorney General's Office, confirmed Foster-Smith's detention. Reports from Colombian media indicate that Ms Ovalle had been missing for several days before her body was discovered on 27 May in a vehicle in the city's Chapinero district.
Investigations suggest that Foster-Smith had left Colombia and entered Ecuador. Colombian police, working with their Ecuadorean counterparts, traced his movements, leading to his apprehension in Ecuador. Authorities have not yet released details on the specific charges he faces or the timeline for any potential extradition proceedings to Colombia.
