Burkina Faso Junta Severs Diplomatic Ties With France Over National Interests
Burkina Faso's military administration has severed diplomatic relations with France, alleging that Paris has persistently undermined the West African nation's national interests. The announcement marks the culmination of growing friction between Ouagadougou and its former colonial ruler.
This definitive break follows a series of escalating demands from the Burkinabe junta, which seized power in a September 2022 coup. The military government had previously insisted on the withdrawal of French troops stationed in the country, a request that was met with French compliance in February 2023. France had also recalled its ambassador from Ouagadougou in January 2023 after Burkina Faso requested the diplomat's removal.
The junta's move comes as it seeks to assert greater autonomy and review its international partnerships, particularly those inherited from the colonial era. The government in Ouagadougou has increasingly focused on perceived infringements of its sovereignty, leading to a complete re-evaluation of its diplomatic posture towards France.
