Cheshire Police Advise Family UK Lacks Authority in Lucy Harrison Shooting in US
Cheshire Police have informed the family of Lucy Harrison that they hold no jurisdiction to investigate her death, which occurred following a shooting in the United States. This notification comes after Jane Coates, Harrison's mother, formally requested the force to collect evidence concerning her daughter's killing.
Ms Harrison, aged 26, was shot in the city of Charlotte, North Carolina, in June 2023. Her mother has maintained that the initial police investigation by US authorities was inadequate and has expressed a desire for a more thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding her daughter's death.
A spokesperson for Cheshire Police stated, "We have fully engaged with the family of Lucy Harrison and explained that her death occurred in America and is therefore subject to US law and jurisdiction." The force clarified that they have no legal authority to intervene or conduct an investigation into a death that took place outside of the UK. This position underscores the established international legal framework that limits domestic police forces to their national borders unless specific agreements or exceptional circumstances are present.
The family's efforts to seek a UK-led investigation highlight the complexities faced by relatives of British citizens who die abroad, often navigating different legal systems and investigative standards.
