Cornell University Rape Accuser Under Online Attack, Lawyer States Identity Sought
The lawyer for a Cornell University student, identified only as 'Jane Doe', has reported that his client is facing an aggressive online campaign to uncover her identity following her allegation of gang rape. The attorney stated that the ongoing attempts to expose her details have left her 'not doing well', adding to the distress of the alleged assault which occurred in February 2024 at a fraternity house.
Reports from the student newspaper, The Cornell Daily Sun, suggest that the alleged incident involved members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. The University, a prominent Ivy League institution, released a statement acknowledging the allegations and emphasising its commitment to supporting the student. However, the online harassment has intensified the victim's ordeal, underscoring broader concerns about victim privacy in high-profile cases.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul previously criticised Cornell's handling of the matter, stating the university 'failed' the student. This incident comes amidst ongoing scrutiny of university responses to sexual assault allegations and the adequacy of support systems for survivors, particularly when they become targets of online abuse.
