Coulsdon's Lion Green Road Housing Scheme Secures RIBA Stirling Prize
Lion Green Road, a residential development in Coulsdon, South London, has been awarded the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize. The scheme, designed by Mae Architects, was commended by the judging panel for its innovative approach to housing and its harmonious relationship with the existing urban fabric.
The project provides 101 homes, predominantly affordable, on a former car park site. Judges highlighted its use of varied brickwork and rooflines, which subtly echo the local Victorian and Edwardian architectural styles, allowing the development to blend into its suburban context without dominating it.
Emphasis was placed on the creation of communal spaces and the integration of green areas, fostering a sense of community for residents. The design also incorporates sustainable features, contributing to its overall architectural merit. This recognition underscores a growing focus within the industry on schemes that prioritise context and community while addressing the critical need for accessible housing.
