Craig Silvey Pleads Guilty to Child Exploitation Material Charges in Perth Court
Craig Silvey, the acclaimed Australian author, has pleaded guilty to charges of possessing and distributing child exploitation material. The 43-year-old entered his plea in a Perth court on Tuesday, admitting to two charges related to material created in January.
Silvey was apprehended in January during a police raid on his Perth home in Western Australia, where authorities confiscated several electronic devices. Two additional charges, one concerning material allegedly produced in 2022, were dropped by the police.
The father-of-three remains on bail and is scheduled to reappear in court in July. Since his initial arrest, publishers, booksellers, and educational institutions across Australia have withdrawn his works, including the popular novels Jasper Jones and Runt, from shelves and teaching lists.
Jasper Jones, a 2009 coming-of-age novel, received numerous Australian literary accolades and was shortlisted for the International Dublin Literary Awards. It was later adapted into a feature film in 2017, starring Toni Collette and Hugo Weaving. His 2022 novel, Runt, also saw a film adaptation in 2024. Both books, alongside Rhubarb, have been removed from school curricula in Western Australia and Victoria.
