Dalry Parents Challenge Council Proposal to Close Scotland's Smallest Secondary School
North Ayrshire Council faces opposition from local parents over its proposal to close Dalry Secondary School, currently Scotland's smallest secondary institution. The school is forecast to enrol just eight pupils by August, prompting the council's consultation on its future.
Parents contend that the closure would dismantle the close-knit educational environment that benefits their children. They highlight concerns about increased travel times and the potential for students to struggle in a significantly larger school setting, such as Garnock Community Campus, which is the proposed alternative.
The council initiated a formal consultation on 29th May, outlining the rationale behind the potential closure, which includes declining pupil numbers and the financial implications of maintaining a school for such a small cohort. However, parents maintain that these factors do not outweigh the educational and social advantages of the current arrangement.
A council spokesperson stated the consultation process ensures all views are considered before a final decision is reached. The outcome will determine if Dalry Secondary, a fixture in the community, will cease operations, fundamentally altering secondary education provision for local families.
