Dangote Plans Africa's Largest Share Sale for Nigerian Oil Refinery
Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote has confirmed plans for the largest public share sale in African history, inviting ordinary Nigerians to become shareholders in his recently commissioned oil refinery. The initiative aims to enable broader participation in the venture's economic benefits.
The Dangote Refinery, located in Lagos, Nigeria, represents a significant private investment in the region's energy infrastructure. With a processing capacity of 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day, it is poised to dramatically reduce Nigeria's reliance on imported refined petroleum products, addressing a long-standing economic vulnerability for the resource-rich nation.
Mr. Dangote stated his intention to ensure that ordinary Nigerians, alongside institutional investors, can acquire stakes in the refinery. This strategy contrasts with typical large-scale industrial projects, which often see ownership concentrated among elite investors or foreign entities. The move could reshape local investment patterns and foster a sense of collective ownership over a critical national asset.
