David Hunter, 78, Dies in Cyprus Care Home Following Manslaughter Conviction
David Hunter, 78, who killed his terminally ill wife, Janice, 74, in Cyprus, has passed away. The former miner, originally from Ashington, Northumberland, had been convicted of manslaughter, rather than murder, for suffocating his wife in December 2021.
Hunter had served 19 months in prison after telling the court Janice had pleaded with him to end her life as she suffered from blood cancer in their Paphos home. He maintained he would never have suffocated his wife of 52 years had she not explicitly asked him to, stating she became "hysterical" before he acceded to her wish.
Hunter had recently been transferred to a Cypriot care home and was undergoing treatment for an infection when he died in a hospital on the island. His death comes as the Cypriot Attorney General pursued an appeal, arguing that the original sentencing for manslaughter was insufficient. Hunter's daughter, Lesley Cawthorne, affirmed he was "a good, kind man and the best dad, who is very much missed by his family and friends."
