Degree Apprenticeship Demand in England Quadruples to 13,000 Applicants Annually
The number of individuals applying for degree apprenticeships in England has escalated dramatically, increasing by 300% in the last three years. Currently, around 13,000 people apply for these programmes each year, reflecting a growing preference for models that combine paid work experience with academic study, circumventing the substantial debt associated with conventional university courses.
Degree apprenticeships offer a pathway to a full bachelor’s or master’s degree, with tuition fees covered by the employer and government funding. Apprentices earn a wage while working towards their qualification, providing a stark contrast to the financial outlays faced by university students in the UK, where tuition fees can reach £9,250 per year, compounded by living costs.
This shift in educational preference highlights a broader reassessment of the value and affordability of higher education in England. As the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact households, the appeal of a debt-free route that also offers immediate employment prospects and practical experience is increasingly compelling for young people and career changers alike.
