Donald Trump Urges New Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh to Act With 'Total Independence'
Donald Trump on Friday called upon the new Federal Reserve Chairman, Kevin Warsh, to exercise 'total independence' during a White House swearing-in ceremony. This directive follows Trump's repeated public confrontations with Warsh's predecessor, Jerome Powell, particularly concerning interest rate decisions.
Trump explicitly stated, 'I really mean this, I want Kevin to be totally independent. Don't look at me, don't look at anybody, just do your own thing and do a great job, okay.' This assertion directly addresses concerns from figures such as senior Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren, who had characterised Warsh's appointment as potentially creating a 'sock puppet' for the presidency.
The ceremony, held at the White House for the first time for a Fed chair since Alan Greenspan in 1987, underscores the importance Trump places on Warsh's tenure. Prior to Warsh's appointment, Trump had consistently advocated for interest rate cuts to stimulate economic growth, making such reductions a prerequisite for consideration for the role.
However, the central bank has maintained its interest rate at between 3.5% and 3.75% as of April, largely due to ongoing assessments of the US-Israel war in Iran's impact on inflation. Economists now anticipate these rates will persist through 2026, with some forecasting potential increases. Higher rates increase borrowing costs for consumers, a measure intended to curb inflation by slowing spending.
Trump also used the occasion to criticise past leadership, asserting that the Federal Reserve 'lost its way' under Powell by focusing on issues such as climate change and diversity, equity, and inclusion, rather than its core mandates of price stability, low inflation, and full employment. Warsh, a former Wall Street banker, pledged to lead a 'reform-oriented' Federal Reserve, aiming for 'unmatched prosperity that will raise living standards for Americans from all walks of life'.
