Downing Street Affirms Manchester City Not 'Above the Rules' After Club Financial Breach Allegations
A Downing Street spokesperson has stated that no football club, including Manchester City, is 'above the rules'. This declaration follows remarks from Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who had previously indicated that the club's owners should not be compelled to sell their stake, even if found guilty of Premier League financial rule breaches.
The Prime Minister's official spokesperson underscored the importance of 'fairness and integrity' in professional football, asserting that any regulatory breaches must be addressed appropriately. This stance directly contrasts with Mr Burnham's earlier comments, where he expressed 'real concern' about the prospect of Manchester City's owners being forced to divest, citing the club's significant contributions to the local economy and community.
Manchester City faces 115 charges from the Premier League concerning alleged financial misconduct over a nine-year period, from 2009 to 2018. The club has consistently denied all allegations. The independent judicial panel overseeing the case has not yet set a hearing date.
