E. Jean Carroll Demands Immediate $5 Million Payment After Trump’s Appeal Fails
Author E. Jean Carroll is demanding that former US President Donald Trump immediately pay the $5 million (approximately £4 million) awarded to her by a New York jury, after an appeals court rejected his attempt to delay the payment. Ms Carroll’s legal representatives stated that Mr Trump’s intention is to avoid settling the damages.
A federal jury in May found Mr Trump liable for sexually abusing Ms Carroll in the 1990s and subsequently defaming her when he denied the allegations in 2022. The jury awarded Ms Carroll $5 million in compensatory and punitive damages.
Mr Trump appealed the verdict, arguing that a New York law, which provides a one-year window for adult victims of sexual assault to file civil lawsuits regardless of when the assault occurred, did not apply to his case. However, the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals rejected this argument, paving the way for Ms Carroll to pursue the payment.
In a public statement, Ms Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, affirmed, “Now, Donald Trump should pay her what he owes her.” The legal team is now expected to initiate proceedings to enforce the judgement.
This development occurs as Mr Trump faces a separate defamation lawsuit from Ms Carroll, seeking $10 million in damages. That case stems from comments he made while still president in 2019, denying her initial allegations and questioning her credibility.
