Crown Prosecution Service Reviews Rape Allegations Against Member of Parliament
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is currently examining a file of evidence from the Metropolitan Police concerning a Member of Parliament arrested on suspicion of rape and sexual assault. The individual, understood to be Dan Norris, was taken into custody in May 2022 following reports of incidents alleged to have occurred between January 2002 and January 2022.
Mr Norris, who was initially bailed and later had his bail extended, has publicly maintained his innocence. He stated that he "vigorously" denies the allegations. The Metropolitan Police confirmed in December 2022 that their investigation was ongoing, and no charges had been brought against the MP at that time. He was subsequently released from bail in December 2022, though the investigation continued.
The CPS review will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed with charges and if a prosecution is in the public interest. The Member of Parliament was suspended from his party shortly after the initial arrest. The House of Commons authorities declined to comment on the matter, citing it as an ongoing police investigation.
