Andy Burnham Urges Government to Deport Rochdale Grooming Gang Ringleader Qari Abdul Rauf
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has publicly urged the government to pursue the deportation of Qari Abdul Rauf, a convicted ringleader of the Rochdale grooming gang. Rauf, a Pakistani national, was handed an indefinite sentence in 2012 for a series of child sex offences. Mr Burnham stated he would formally request the Home and Foreign Secretaries to "review all possible options" regarding Rauf's removal from the UK.
This intervention follows a government policy shift in 2018, which made foreign nationals convicted of grooming crimes eligible for deportation. However, concerns have been raised regarding the practicalities of deporting individuals who might face human rights objections to their removal, or where their home country refuses to accept them.
Rauf's case has been a flashpoint for criticism of the UK's justice system and immigration procedures. The government's stated commitment to removing foreign offenders, particularly those involved in such heinous crimes, often clashes with the complexities of international law and bilateral agreements. The demand from Mr Burnham underscores the political pressure on the Conservative government to demonstrate a firm stance on immigration and law and order, particularly in cases involving severe sexual exploitation.
