Eighty Migrants Presumed Dead After Vessel Located Off Canary Islands Coast

A vessel carrying migrants, intercepted off the Canary Islands, has led to fears that at least 80 individuals perished. Rescuers successfully located 44 survivors aboard the craft. However, five deceased individuals were also discovered on the vessel.

Bad weather significantly hampered rescue operations, forcing the search and rescue team to leave the five bodies on board. The vessel was subsequently escorted to the port of Los Cristianos in Tenerife.

This incident adds to a grim tally of lives lost on the perilous Atlantic migration route to the Canary Islands. Data from Spain's Interior Ministry indicates that in 2023, approximately 40,000 migrants reached the Canary Islands by sea, marking a substantial increase from previous years.

Humanitarian organisations consistently highlight the extreme dangers of this route, often citing inadequate search and rescue provisions in an area where European Union states prioritise border externalisation over saving lives. Western policies frequently overlook the root causes of displacement, opting instead for securitised borders that push vulnerable people towards increasingly hazardous journeys.
