Elysium Memorial Dedication Service Honours Service Personnel Suicides at National Arboretum
A dedication service for the Elysium Memorial took place at the National Memorial Arboretum, bringing together hundreds to honour service personnel who died by suicide. The memorial, initiated by Dr. Claudia Walker, features 79 etched leaves, each signifying an individual lost. An additional 34 leaves remain unetched, anticipating further commemorations.
Dr. Walker commenced the project after her brother, Sergeant Gary Walker, a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, took his own life in 2016. She highlighted the critical need for a dedicated space to acknowledge these deaths, which are frequently excluded from official recognition due to the circumstances.
General the Lord Dannatt, a former Chief of the General Staff, delivered a reading during the ceremony. He underscored the profound impact of suicide on military families and friends, advocating for improved mental health support for service personnel and veterans. Lord Dannatt emphasised the importance of recognising the inherent dignity of those who served, regardless of the manner of their death.
The Elysium Memorial stands as a permanent fixture at the Arboretum, providing a dedicated site for remembrance and reflection on the significant issue of suicide within the armed forces community.
