Energy Suppliers Demand Urgent Government Action on Household Bills for Winter
Energy UK, the trade body representing electricity and gas suppliers across the country, has issued a direct call for immediate government action to mitigate the severe impact of rising energy bills on households this winter. The organisation warned that without swift intervention, millions of families would face untenable financial strain.
Household Hardship Projected
The plea underscores growing concerns within the industry regarding the affordability crisis, as wholesale energy prices continue to drive up consumer costs. Suppliers are witnessing an alarming increase in customers struggling to manage payments, a situation projected to worsen considerably as colder weather approaches.
The group's statement emphasised that existing support mechanisms are insufficient to address the scale of the impending crisis. They advocate for a comprehensive package of measures, which could include expanded grants, VAT reductions on energy, or a more substantial rebate scheme, to prevent widespread defaults and hardship.
This intervention highlights the significant pressure accumulating on government ministers to devise an effective strategy before the peak winter demand, where energy consumption and, consequently, bills are at their highest.
