Engineer Kieran Hughes' Balcony Fall Inquest Reveals High Alcohol Level, Structural Concerns
An inquest into the death of Kieran Hughes, a 23-year-old engineer who fell from a holiday apartment balcony in Salou, Spain, has revealed he had a “substantial level” of alcohol in his blood at the time. A pathologist indicated that this level of intoxication would have significantly impaired his judgement and coordination, making it improbable he was aware he was falling.
The hearing was told that Mr Hughes, from Anglesey, was on holiday with friends when the incident occurred in October 2022. Forensic investigation presented to the inquest highlighted potential issues with the balcony's railing, suggesting it may have been insufficient for safety standards. The precise sequence of events leading to the fall remains a focal point of the inquiry.
Mr Hughes’ family are actively seeking further information regarding the circumstances, particularly concerning the structural aspects of the balcony. The inquest continues, examining whether any deficiencies in the building’s construction or maintenance contributed to the tragic outcome.
