Kashim Chowdhury Faces Fraud Charges Over Undisclosed Multiple Public Sector Roles
Kashim Chowdhury, a former civil servant, is currently on trial at Southwark Crown Court, facing charges of fraud by false representation. Prosecutors allege that Mr Chowdhury maintained five separate, full-time public sector positions simultaneously, failing to disclose these overlapping commitments to his various employers. The arrangement purportedly allowed him to collect salaries exceeding £100,000 over a period.
Mr Chowdhury, who previously worked for organisations including the Cabinet Office, the Ministry of Justice, and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He contends that his employers were aware, or should have been aware, of his multiple engagements. He told the court he was "surprised" when eventually charged, believing he had been transparent about his work arrangements.
The prosecution's case rests on the premise that Mr Chowdhury deliberately misrepresented his availability and exclusive commitment to each role. However, Mr Chowdhury argues that the nature of his employment often involved project-based work and that he managed his time effectively across his commitments, without detriment to any single employer. The trial continues, with the court scrutinising the documentation and communication surrounding his employment contracts.
